Be a Landlord yes or no?

That used to be my dream, when I got fed up of being a technician I would sign up and take over a pub, but what has happened over the last 10 years. The industry has been taken over by rip off merchants more akin to double-glazing salesmen and what really bothers me is nobody is doing anything about it.

You only have to look at (well where I live) it used to be more or less a free trade area now it is all pub groups, pubs that will not survive the smoking ban let alone anything else, now all you see is the Posters outside the pubs "Opportunity for running your own pub" or something like that. Yet we all know it is a, well most of it is a rip off. Banks will not lend you the money these days you would be too high a risk. So how many people out there are still looking to do something with their redundancy money thinking that the pub trade is their investment opportunity of a lifetime?

When as we have all seen it, only to find that between 3 and 6 months they have realised that they have made the biggest mistake of their life. So these days to take over a pub as a leaseholder or tenant "you must be mad". The only way to go is the free trade or perhaps you might find a reasonable not too greedy landlord with the odd pub. Am I wrong or just being too cynical?
